Q177: I want to claim asylum in the UK, how do I do it?
To be eligible to claim asylum you must have left your own country AND be unable to return due to fear of being prosecuted. You should apply as soon as you enter the UK or as soon as you think it would be unsafe to return to your own country.
The decision as to if you should be granted asylum is usually given in 6 months, however lying in your application could lead to imprisonment or deportation.
In some cases, claimants should pursue their claim in another EU member state or other safe country, whereupon the Nationality Directorate can remove them to that country.
