Q643: What is hate crime?

The definition of a hate crime is:

'Any hate incident, which constitutes a criminal offence, perceived by the victim or any other person, as being motivated by prejudice or hate'.

A hate crime is based upon any of the following:

  • Race
  • Sexual orientation
  • Faith
  • Disability
  • Transgender identity

If you feel like you have been the victim of a hate crime or incident then report the incident to Police Scotland by dialling 101. The police take all reports of hate incidents very seriously.
